THE Rice Bowl series celebrates Japan's ceramic diversity among production regions. Each bowl showcases the unique characteristics of its origin.
This Bizen edition is created in collaboration with Bishū Kiln in Okayama, established by the late Living National Treasure, Tōshū Yamamoto. Each bowl is entirely handmade on the potter's wheel and fired in a climbing kiln used only once yearly—capturing raw, natural beauty through its unglazed finish.
Bizen is one of Japan's six ancient kilns with over a thousand years of history, maintaining the unglazed pottery tradition. During the Muromachi period, Murata Jukō, founder of wabi-cha, selected Bizen as representative of Japanese-style tea utensils.
The clay is Bizen's lifeblood—river-washed mountain soil exposed to wind and rain for three years, then kneaded and stored in an earthen chamber for three more years to develop its distinctive character. Fired slowly with pine-split fuel, every bowl emerges with unique flame patterns and colour shifts. No two are exactly alike, shaped by kiln temperature, placement, and season.
THE Rice Bowl's proportions are designed to nestle best in your hand. The size was considered with natural finger proportions and is a shape that simply feels right.
