We would like you to feel as confident in our objects as we do. Here are answers to the questions we are asked most often about our Japanese collection and our service.

FAQs

How do you choose the makers in your collection?
We focus on regional diversity and honest making. We source from historic kilns and independent workshops across Japan—from the famous steel-working town of Sakai to the traditional pottery regions of Arita to heritage textile of Nara. We look for makers who reimagine heritage techniques to create timeless, high-quality objects that fit a contemporary aesthetic.

What is "Kōgei"?
Kōgei refers to traditional Japanese crafts made with high technical skill and intended for everyday use. We curate pieces that bridge the gap between this heritage and modern living.

Are these items handmade?
The majority of our collection is handcrafted or finished by hand. Because of this, small variations in glaze, texture, and shape are a natural part of their "personality" and charm.

How do I care for my Japanese tableware?
Most of our ceramics, porcelain and lacquerware is durable enough for modern use and dishwasher safe. However, to preserve the life of handcrafted glazes, we generally recommend hand-washing. Specific care instructions are included on the product details section of each product pages.

How do I maintain my Sakai knives?
To keep your knives in top condition, always hand-wash and dry them immediately after use. Avoid the dishwasher and use a wooden or soft plastic cutting board to protect the edge. Depending on the usage, sharpening with a whetstone or professional service at least 1-2 times per year is recommended.
