This beautifully crafted tray showcases the distinctive wood grain that defines Echizen woodwork. The corner-cut design adds subtle elegance to a functional form that has served Japanese households for generations—for serving meals, carrying dishes, organizing essentials, or displaying treasured objects.
Creating "square woodwork" (kakumono) requires combining boards of uniform thickness through precise calculations and highly skilled joinery techniques. Each tray reveals the deep wood knowledge and blade-sharpening mastery passed down through generations of Echizen artisans.
Echizen lacquerware production involves four specialized stages: wood base preparation, undercoating, lacquering, and gold lacquer decoration. While bowls are called "round items" (marumono), these rectangular trays belong to the kakumono tradition—preserving Japan's exceptional woodworking heritage in a form that works beautifully in modern homes.
