In Japan, each year is associated with an animal from the twelve-year zodiac cycle, known as Eto. These animals appear in shrines, seasonal displays, and New Year gifts, and it is traditionally considered good fortune to welcome and celebrate the animal of the year.

This modern Eto ornament from Nakagawa reimagines the horse for contemporary living. Crafted in Shigaraki ware, its softly rounded, abstract form is inspired by a simple wooden horse. The coarse clay gives it a warm, earthy presence, finished with a tail made from domestically sourced straw.
