A Wa Rousoku (和ろうそく) scented candle made by Nakagawa, in the centuries-old Japanese tradition of candles built around a wick that's quite different from a Western one.
The core is washi (Japanese paper), wrapped with tōshin (灯芯) — a length of soft pith drawn from the inside of rush-grass stems with the outer skin removed. The tōshin used here is hand-made in Andō Town, Nara Prefecture, a region historically known for its rush grass and the craft of tōshin-hiki — drawing the pith into wick form one length at a time. The thicker wick absorbs more wax and burns with a larger, brighter flame than the cotton thread used in a Western candle.
Available in four scents: Sandalwood, Green Seeds, Japanese White Birch, and Violet. A piece for a tea moment, a quiet evening, or a personal zen space.
