Collection: Meizan Kiln
Shigaraki is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns — a region with over 1,200 years of pottery history, where climbing kilns still stand alongside working studios in the hills of Shiga Prefecture.
Meizan has been part of this story since 1622, when founder Ishino Isuke was commissioned by the second Shogun of the Edo period to produce a tea caddy of such quality that he was awarded the title of tea caddy master. The kiln went on to create tableware for the Korean Envoy's delegation in 1810 — a mark of extraordinary trust that has defined Meizan's reputation ever since.
But tradition at Meizan has never meant standing still. The studio believes that innovation is what keeps a tradition alive — and for 400 years, it has adapted to each era without losing the warm, earthy character that makes Shigaraki ware what it is.
