A leisurely whale swims across this hand-painted Arita ware rice bowl, made by Keizan Kiln — founded in 1957 in a region of Saga Prefecture that has produced porcelain for more than 400 years.
The whale is drawn in sometsuke (染付) — cobalt-blue underglaze on white porcelain, painted onto the bisque clay before a clear glaze and a second firing. Sometsuke is one of Arita's signature decoration techniques, dating to the early 17th century. The porcelain itself is made from Amakusa stone, distinctive to Arita: clear-white, light in the hand, and durable through daily use.
A medium-sized meshiwan (飯碗) — the personal rice bowl Japanese households keep one of for each person. It is also a versatile bowl that fits comfortably in on hand, which can be used for multiple purpose.
Each whale is painted by hand, so the line varies slightly across pieces.
