Traditionally used for serving dipping sauce with soba noodles, the soba choko is one of the most versatile vessels in Japanese tableware. This porcelain cup can be used freely for tea, small desserts, dips/sauces or side dishes.
The softly grey-toned white porcelain is decorated with a hand-painted indigo (gosu) motif. Subtle variations in the brushwork and glaze give each cup a gentle warmth and character that only hand painting can achieve.
Part of the IROHA series by Barbar, the design draws inspiration from Kurawanka-wan—simple porcelain bowls produced in Hasami during the Edo period for everyday use. The series revisits historic patterns once used on these humble tablewares.
We offer two motifs: Marumon (circle) and Kikumon (chrysanthemum). The circle, associated with the sun, symbolises vitality and continuity, while the chrysanthemum has long been regarded in Japan as a flower representing nobility, longevity, and protective strength.
