Collection: Hasami | Barbar

Maruhiro, the creator of Hasami and Barbar, is a Hasami ware producer based in Hasami Town, Nagasaki Prefecture — a town that has made pottery for more than 400 years. Founded in 1957 as a street stall by Kyōhei Baba's grandfather, Maruhiro is now run by the third generation and designs tableware in the town's traditional division-of-labour system.

That system, distinctive to Hasami region, splits production across specialised workshops. One handles clay preparation, another throws, another glazes, another fires. Maruhiro sits at the centre as designer and producer — commissioning the workshops that make each stage, then bringing the finished pieces to market. It's a way of working that keeps the town's specialisations deep and its tradition alive.

Across three generations, Maruhiro has built a reputation for breaking with convention while staying close to the region's roots — colourful, modern designs that still come out of Hasami's centuries-old kilns.

We carry a selection of Hasami and Barbar series from Maruhiro's tableware at Karintō Edition.
